Joseph G. Asher is a lifelong student of the Civil War, deeply engaged with Christian literature that explores themes of redemption and second chances. As a boy, he read Indianapolis Star newspaper articles highlighting U.S. history from '100 Years Ago Today,' which ignited his passion for the stories of nineteenth-century America. This fascination led him to delve into books about the Antebellum era of the South, further inspiring his visits to the historic battlefields and cities from this turbulent time in American history. In his novels, he focuses solely on the places he has visited and researched, weaving elements of historical fiction into his narratives.
As a young man, he attended Indiana and Purdue Universities, ultimately becoming a high school teacher of English. He taught core classes, including novels, Shakespeare, writing, and even broadcast writing for the school’s one hundred-watt FM radio station. His students remarked that he never taught a novel without providing its historical background, with some claiming that the literature class often felt like a history class!
Throughout his life, he was called to the ministry. As a pastor, missionary, prison chaplain, and hospital chaplain, he learned that God gives us what we need, not necessarily what we want, a lesson that resonates within the themes of second chances prevalent in both his life and writings.
